The race had a remarkable finish. The Ford driven by Ken Miles and Denny Hulme had been in the lead for a long time, but slowed down shortly before the end to allow another Ford, driven by McLaren and Amon, to pull alongside for a photo opportunity. The cars crossed the finish line at exactly the same time, but McLaren and Amon were declared the winners because they had started from a lower position and had therefore covered a greater distance.
