The disaster of the 1955 Le Mans 24 Hours occurred during the 23rd edition of the event when one of the racing cars flew into the crowd due to a collision. This killed the driver Pierre Levegh and 82 spectators. This is the highest number of casualties ever in the history of motorsport.
